Wa People

History and Culture

Local Wa people are an ethnic group that lives mainly along China-Burma border.

This group in both countries shares same language, myth and collective memoris.

Mountains blocked their exit but granted them exotic, ecological and egalitarian life styles.

Burma immigrants from the same ethnic group came to Ximeng because of poverty. Like Wa in China, their only commercial activity is tea pick and sell. Although they obtain high quality organic tea, the quantity is low. Most importantly, they lack of sells channels to bring their organic tea to the world. Annual income per household is still less than 800 pound, categorized under the poverty line by the United Nations.
